What's Happening this Fall?

Bonnie Ferguson Butler won an AIDP Designer's Choice Award for "Skyline Stands." She also was juried into the Great Lakes Pastel Society's National Show in Midland, MI (Richard McKinley, juror); Springfield Art Guild's Green Spring Garden Park Exhibit (three pastels, with "Behind the
Scenes" receiving an Honorable Mention) in Alexandria, VA; and PONSHOP Square City Exhibit in Fredericksburg, VA. Additional shows include Colonial Beach Artists' Guild's Potomac River Regional Art Show, Alexandria's Kelly's Art & Frame, Clifton's Trummer's on Main, and Lorton's Workhouse W-16 Exhibits, Featured Artist Show, and Centennial Celebration. Philip Bennet is having a show titled Mindscapes II in two galleries at the Glenview Mansion, Rockville Civic Center Park, November 4-30, 2010. Opening reception November 7, 1:30-3:30. Convenient parking on the premises.  Call (240) 314-5004 for recorded directions. Except for the Sunday opening the Glenview Mansion is closed Saturdays and Sundays.

Dawn Capron is having a single person show at the River Road Universalist Unitarian Congregational Church in Bethesda from September 12 through October 7.  The artist's reception will be Sunday, September 12, from 3 to 5.  For directions, go to  For daily times, please call 301-229-0400.

In addition:
"Take Me Home" won honorable mention in the Art League of Alexandria's Scapes show in August.
"Pears On Chenille" won the WInsor and Newton award at the Pastel Painters of Maine show in July as well as being accepted into the Connecticut Pastel Society's Renaissance in Pastel show.
"Standing Guard" was accepted into the Catherine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club's 114th Annual juried exhibition in October, National Arts Club, Gramercy Park, NY.
"Old Dominion Bricks and Dogwood'' won an honorable mention in the September Art League,Torpedo Factory juried show.

Alice Kelsey will be exhibiting 15 of her pastels and several oils paintings in the "Ridges and Valleys Show" at Faustina Gallery, Lewisburg, PA, (570-524-5080), from 11/5 - 11/ 20, 2010.  The opening reception is November 5, from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Alice will be at the opening reception and looks forward to meeting MPS members that are interested in attending. gallery.

Deborah Maklowski was one of 30 artists juried into the first annual Paint It! Ellicott City in August: she currently has 3 plein air paintings from that event hanging in the Howard County Center for the Arts, 8510 High Ridge Road in Ellicott City, through October 16. Deborah is also exhibiting 10 pastels at the Glenwood Community Center in September, along with mixed media collage artist Olga Rosser; has 4 pastels on view at the Howard County Conservancy on Frederick Rd in Woodstock, in the Artists' Gallery's "Vanishing Howard County" exhibit that runs through October 31; has a pastel in the Thomas Viaduct 175th anniversary celebration exhibit at the B&O Railroad Museum on Pratt Street in Baltimore, through February 2011; and has 3 colored pencil pieces in the North American Miniature Art Show on view at the Fells Point Gallery in Baltimore through October 30.

Maria Marino's pastel "Serenity" was juried into the 38th Annual PSA show held at the National Arts Club in New York City. The painting received the "Tampa Bay Pastel Society" award.

The PSA  has awarded Maria two consecutive awards at this nationally recognized show. Maria also has a plein air painting titled "Patapsco" currently on exhibit at the Howard County MD Tourism Office. The piece received the "Director's Choice" award for open plein air works that were exhibited at the Howard County Center for the Arts the evening of August 30, 2010. Beginning  September 18, 2010, two paintings were submitted for inclusion  in a non-juried show held at  the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts located in Hagerstown, MD. The paintings are titled "Yosemite" and "Tranquility".  The show is a collection of 60 pastel paintings created by Maryland Pastel Society Signature members.

Michael McGurk has a painting in the Pastel Society of America  2010 exhibit in New York City. Also, he will teach a pastel workshop Sept 13-15 sponsored by the Shenandoah Valley Art center in Waynesboro Va.

Lisa Mitchell will be offering pastel instruction beginning on Friday October 1, in her home-based studio located in northern Baltimore County, (4 miles north of Hunt Valley). This class is for pastel artists, (beginner to intermediate) wanting to improve their drawing and painting skills in an encouraging, relaxing and fun-filled small group setting with plenty of individual attention. Exploring the Nature of Pastel with Lisa Mitchell

Lisa will be participating in Paint Annapolis 2010 Plein Air Competition, Sept. 22 - Sept. 26. Approximately 30 other artists have been juried into this annual event. Lisa will be presenting a pastel demonstration at The Hunt and Harvest Autumn Invitational Art Show on Sunday, November 28, 2010 at Saint James Episcopal Church, 3100 Monkton Road, Monkton, Maryland 21111. She will be exhibiting 6 of her works along with 8 other artists.

JoEllen Murphy's figure painting "Repose" was juried into the 38th Annual Pastel Society of America show in New York City.
She is also part of the Columbia Pike Artist Studio which is having an open house Gala on Saturday, November 13 from 6 to 9pm. This is a popular event with paintings, prints, collage and sculpture on exhibit with the opportunity to buy directly from the artist.
