"Saltwater Marsh"

Many years ago, I was fortunate to be given a gift of 3 weeks at the beach at the Outer Banks of North Carolina. I took with me a small set of watercolor paints and some paper. One day, while sitting on a sand dune, I pulled out the paints and started painting the scene in front of me. I didn’t really know what I was doing, but became so very engrossed in the process that hours went by without my realizing it. This turned out to be a life-changing event, the moment I decided that I wanted to paint.

But first I needed to learn all I could about painting. When I returned to my home in Northern Virginia, I enrolled in a class at The Art League School in the Torpedo Factory Art Center in Alexandria, VA. I studied there for several years with Diane Tesler. I’ve also taken classes with Danni Dawson and Rob Liberace, and over the years have taken workshops with Alan Flattmann, Bob Rohm, Susan Ogilvie, Richard McKinley, Jack Pardue, Kim Lordier, and Stan Sperlak.

The Day She Started to Walk

I paint both portraits and landscapes with pastels. I enjoy doing portraits and love capturing the innocence and wonder on a child’s face. The joy and innocence of our young children is something we cherish forever, and I rejoice in capturing these moments in portraits.

As a landscape painter, I love capturing the play of light, shadow and reflection.

My intention is to record my experience of the beauty of a location. I share with the viewer the feeling of peace and tranquility that I experienced. There is so much chaos and noise in the world today, and people are so busy that they rarely take the time to be in nature. I strive to bring them the experience of a tranquil scene with only a glance.

Living in Columbia, MD, for the past 10 years, I have enjoyed working with the Maryland Pastel Society and being on the Board. I always enjoy being with such talented and friendly people, both artists and those interested in art who come to our shows.

I’m currently associated with the Artists’ Gallery in Columbia, MD, and Still Life Gallery in Ellicott City, MD.
