Member039s Only Exhibition Ratner Museum
The Maryland Pastel Society kicked off the 2009 exhibition year in January, with our Members Only Juried Exhibition at the Dennis and Phillip Ratner Museum, in Bethesda. Our juror was Joe Fitzgerald, a Washington D.C. pastelist, oil painter, and printmaker whose designs were chosen for the obverse and reverse of the 2005 nickel celebrating the Lewis & Clark expedition. Joe selected 50 works from the 119 submitted by 41 MPS member artists, and it was a beautiful show. Click here to see the 12 award-winning paintings. The only difficulty was picking up our work on January 28th: many thanks to those hardy souls who braved the icy roads - and helped us shovel and scrape the Museum parking lot!

In addition to the excellent work on display, the 2009 Members Only show was notable, as well, for three new awards. The first two of these were from the Connecticut Pastel Society and from the Pastel Society of America, provided under a reciprocal awards agreement with those two groups arranged last year by the MPS Executive Board. We also decided for the first time to give a People's Choice Award. We set up a voting box and provided voting slips that visitors to the show could use to vote for their favorite painting. Well over 200 votes were cast during the month that the show was up. Clearly, this was an idea that visitors liked, and we plan to continue this practice at selected future MPS shows.
