Laura Era will be teaching small classes in pastel, oil, or drawing for all levels with lots of personal instruction, demos, and critiques at her Solomons Cove Studio just 8 miles west of Cambridge, MD. The classes are monthly sessions from February through October. They are Tuesday afternoons from 1pm - 5:30pm. A one month session is 4 classes or 18 hours for $225 (due first day). Diane Furlong's pastel, "An Irish Morning", took Best in Show at the Valley Educational Center for the Creative Arts (VECCA) all-medium members’ show in September 2012. Her painting "Springhouse in the Gloaming" took First Place in the works on paper division in the same show. Diane is also thrilled to announce that she was one of the 25 artists asked to participate in Maggie Price's new book, "Creative Freedom," which describes 52 ways to break through your creative block. "Creative Freedom," which comes out in March, is available now at a special pre-order price on Amazon.
Lynn Goldstein was selected to participate in "Resistance Through Art," an exhibition commemorating the Holocaust, taking place February 12 through April 15 at the Jewish Community Center of Northern Virginia (JCCNV). This exhibition is being sponsored by the JCCNV and The Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater Washington. Lynn is submitting two pieces; one is a pastel painting entitled, "Veiled in Uncertainty," while another is an installation piece. Additionally, Lynn will be teaching a 14-day workshop in Southern France in October. The dates for the workshop are October 5-19, 2013. Jean Hirons’ new book "Finding Your Style in Pastel" is now available and she will be signing copies for sale at a reduced rate ($42) at the upcoming January MPS meeting. Comments have all been very positive about the design, coverage, and usefulness. The book is available online from the publisher (www.authorhouse.com) and from Barnes and Noble and Amazon. The book was designed and edited by MPS members Elroy Williams and Cathy DeLorimier, and contains paintings from a number of MPS members, as well as artists from around the country. The class is geared to more experienced artists. For beginning and intermediate instruction, Jean is teaching a 3-hour class on Tuesday afternoons, 12:30-3:30, at the Yellow Barn in Glen Echo (www.yellowbarnstudio.com). Desiree Holmes Scherini will be instructing a 5-week course in Design & Composition for Drawing and Painting, beginning February 12th, and a Still Life Pastel Painting Weekend Workshop, March 16th and 17th, both at Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts, in Annapolis. Susan Klinger had one work selected to be part of the Artist’s Equity Exhibition to be held at the GoggleWorks Center for the Arts in Reading, PA – January 11 to March 13, 2013. Susan also had 2 new pastels exhibited as part of “Embrace Open Space”, an invitational exhibit at Montgomery County Community College (PA) in cooperation with the Montgomery County Lands Trust. The show ran through December 2012. In addition, Susan had 2 paintings accepted to the “Scenes of the Schuylkill” exhibit, at Montgomery County Community College, West campus, in conjunction with the Schuylkill River Heritage Area. This show was in October, 2012. At the Perkiomen Valley Art Center Open juried exhibition, held at the Hill School in Pottstown, PA, in December, Susan had 2 pieces accepted and won third place in the pastel category.
Deborah Maklowski’s plein air painting “The Red Canoe” received a Third Place award at the Mid-Atlantic Plein Air Painters’ Association’s 2012 on-line exhibition, “Magnificent Mid-Atlantic,” while her colored pencil miniature, “Stone Barn” won an Honorable Mention at the Miniature Painters, Sculptors & Gravers Society of Washington DC’s 79th Annual International Exhibition of Fine Art in Miniature, held at Strathmore Mansion in Bethesda. She also has a colored pencil drawing currently on view in Strathmore’s 22nd Annual Strathmore Artists Juried Exhibition, "Points of View," which runs through February 9.
Eve Miller's paintings received: at the Salgamundi 35th Annual Juried Painting Exhibition, the Pastel Society of America Merit Award; at the Catharine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club’s 116th Annual Juried Exhibition, the Dorothy Barberis Memorial Award; at the Sierra Pastel Society’s 9th Annual Pastels on High International Exhibition, Merit Award; and at the Pastel Society of North Florida’s 12th Biennial National Juried Exhibition, Exceptional Merit Award.
Lisa Mitchell has been accepted into the South Street Gallery Artist Guild starting in January. The gallery is located in the small arts town of Easton, Maryland. The Guild consists of a small number of artists who share in the business of running the gallery. Hours of operation: Friday, Saturday and Sunday, 11 a.m. - 6 p.m. The guild participates in the First Friday Gallery Walk in Easton each month. The focus is on quality representational paintings including Eastern Shore landscapes, plein air paintings, still life, portraits, wildlife and figurative works. Pottery, sculpture, and hand blown glass items are also available.
Grace Newcomer has a painting titled "Sunflowers" in the Gaithersburg Fine Arts Association’s exhibition in the MD House of Delegates in Annapolis. The GFAA show will be on display on the second floor (near office 219) of the Lowe House Office Building, 6 Bladen Street, Annapolis, and ends on April 8th. Joyce Turk had two paintings juried into the 22nd Annual Strathmore Artists Juried Exhibition, "Points of View". The Show opened January 7 and runs until February 9, 2013. The reception is on Sunday, January 14 from 2-4 p.m.
