Summer Critique Meeting

Dave Lawton at the easel

The MPS general meeting in July continued our popular new summer "tradition," in which four of our full members critique the work of other members, offering advice and pointers. This year, John Held, David Lawton, Joyce Lister, and Maria Marino were our noble volunteers, set up at separate stations around the room. By the start of the session, each of them had a list of 15 to 20 eager critiq-ees signed up, each of them with as many as three pastel paintings up for evaluation. As usual, the collective body of work on view was wonderful, inspiring, and widely varied across subject matter, technique, and style. Also as usual, it didn't take long for the "audience" – members viewing one critique session while waiting for their own to begin – to become fully engaged, offering their own perspectives and ideas on each painting.

Besides being educational and informative, the critique sessions provide a great opportunity for our members to reconnect with one another as individual artists, sharing common challenges, discovering common solutions, and reenergizing our creative selves. Whether you're looking for help solving a specific problem in a work-in-progress or for guidance and advice on issues evident across all three works, these meetings are always useful, inspiring, and fun.
