What's Happening this Summer?

Bonnie Ferguson Butler has been included in the Great Lakes Pastel Society National Show running through August 1 in Midland, MI. The juror was Richard McKinley. She is also the Featured Artist at Lorton's Workhouse Arts Center June 9 through July 4 in Building W-16. Her exhibit is titled, "10 Mile Radius: Landscapes Near The Workhouse" and includes pastels and oils of the local area.

Judith Einstman's still life pastel, "Delicious", was selected by the juror, Dwayne Wakeham, to be included in the Southeastern Pastel Society's International Exhibition. Of 347 pastels entered, he chose 65 for the show which was at the Oglethorpe University Museum in Atlanta, GA. The show can be seen online at www.southeasternpastel.org.

Jean Hirons won one of the top three awards, the Award of Honor, at the Pastel Painters Society of Cape Cod's "For Pastels Only on Cape Cod" show in South Yarmouth, MA.  Jean also won the University Art Award, a $400 set of Schminke pastels, at the Pastel Society of the West Coast's "Pastels USA" national show. The juror of awards for both shows was Richard McKinley.  

Jean recently taught a 4-day plein air workshop in Massachusetts and will be teaching another this fall.  She teaches at Montgomery College, Rockville Campus, and offers other local classes (check her website at:  www.jeanhirons.com or contact her at: jeanhirons@comcast.net)

Greg Johannesen is pleased to inform MPS that he was awarded 1st Place at the 2010 Paint the Town Quickdraw event in Solomons, MD. He is also pleased to say that he has been accepted into the Havre de Grace Plein Air Competition coming up in September 15-18, 2010.

Betsy Kellum was accepted into the following national/international juried shows: Pastel Society of the West Coast exhibition in Los Gatos, CA, the Southeastern Pastel Society show in Atlanta and the Pastel Painter's of Maine show in Kennebunk, ME where she was awarded the 7th place Winson & Newton award.  Additionally, Betsy currently has work in juried shows in The Art League Gallery, Old Town Alexandria, VA and in Harrisonburg, Virginia.  She recently joined the Richard Stravitz Gallery in Virginia Beach, VA.

Madeleine Kelly recently was featured in the April issue of American Artist.   Over the next few months she will be holding a number of workshops including a 3-day workshop on October 29-31, 2010 at Ashland Hollow Gardens, Hockessin, Delaware.  This workshop will focus on staying loose with Acrylic and Pastel and the creation of customized support surfaces.  In addition, there will be a stroll in the gardens and wine and cheese critique. Deborah Maklowski recently earned Signature membership in the Colored Pencil Society of America when her drawing "What's Next?" was juried into the CPSA's 18th Annual International Exhibition, running July 22 through August 20 at the Art Museum of Los Gatos, in California. Deborah also invites you to stop in at the Artists' Gallery in Columbia during the month of July to see her Featured Artist show, consisting of 20 pastel landscapes.

Rosalie Nadeau's award winning painting "Strip Poker" is on exhibit in the PPSCC's For Pastels Only 14th national exhibition. August 7th & 8th, she is conducting a Plein Air workshop from her studio in Orleans on Cape Cod. Contact PAAM.org or Rosalie for further info.

Kay Sandler's "Antique Peony #2" was awarded a prize sponsored by Strathmore Paper at the 6th Annual Northeast National Pastel Exhibition held in Old Forge, New York.  The Jurors were Lorenzo Chavez and Susan Ogilvie.  This is the 4th year in a row that Kay's work has received awards at this show.

Antique Peony


Lisa Sheppard will be teaching a four-week landscape pastel workshop in October, 2010 at the Carroll County Arts Council. The classes are October 2, 9, 23 and 30, from 10am-2pm.
