FROM THE PRESIDENT'S EASEL

Fall, 2012

We’re gearing up for an exciting autumn! The first weekend in November brings IAPS President and legendary pastel teacher Maggie Price to Maryland for a three-day workshop for MPS members, at the Howard County Center for the Arts. The workshop is currently full, but contact Joyce Lister if you’d like to be placed on the waiting list.

Joyce Lister is also the featured demonstrator at our Autumn Members’ Meeting on Saturday, October 20. A popular pastel teacher and highly successful artist, Joyce will give us a figure demonstration, working from a photograph. It’s been a good long while since we had a “people” demo, so you don’t want to miss this one!

We’ll also be talking about a new idea from current Vice President and President-to-be Dawn Capron: group painting sessions, probably held at the Howard County Center for the Arts, working from instructional DVDs by nationally known artists. If you’d be interested in participating, and/or in lending a DVD from your personal library for one of these sessions, let us know at the meeting – we’re looking to gauge the level of interest among our members before we start renting rooms. And of course, October is election month: you’ll be electing officers for the MPS Executive Board who will serve until October 2014. The slate, as it currently stands, is as follows:

  • For Vice President: (help! we’re still looking!)
  • For Treasurer: Mary Anne Warner (currently serving in that capacity)
  • For Recording Secretary: Barbara Steinacker (currently serving in that capacity)
  • For Corresponding Secretary: JoEllen Murphy (currently serving in that capacity)

Although they’re not elected, please be sure to thank Maria Marino, Joyce Lister, and Deborah Maklowski, each of whom has agreed to continue in their current roles as Membership Chair, Workshop Coordinator, and Webmaster, respectively; Jack Pardue, David Lawton, Lisa Mitchell, Chris Powell, and Daniel Wise, who have agreed to serve on the new Jurying Committee; and Mary Boeh, Bob Slaterbeck, and Bob Borrell, who very graciously continue to manage the hospitality tasks for our meetings.

We’re also looking forward to a very busy 2013, with a Signature Members’ show lined up for the spring-summer at the Arts Barn in Gaithersburg (Mary Boeh will be the show Chair) and of course our biennial national juried show, Shades of Pastel, scheduled for November 2013 at the Delaplaine Visual Arts Education Center in Frederick, MD. We will be looking for MPS members to Chair this show and take on a variety of tasks critical to its success, so if you’d like to help, please let one of the Board members know ASAP.

Meanwhile, don’t forget to check the “artists’ opportunities” section of our website for information on pastel instruction, exhibition venues seeking artists, and other useful ideas. We’ve also posted all the 2013 meeting dates on the MPS calendar, along with the 2013 deadlines for applying for Signature Membership.

That’s Saturday, October 20, noon to 4pm, at the Glenwood Community Center in western Howard County. Bring a recent painting or one in progress to show us (with a card or label for it so we know it’s yours!) and something yummy for the food table: we’ll be drawing names as usual for the “food prizes.” See you there!
